Considered
one of the most important tourist destinations
of Sonora, San Carlos offers visitors all they
need to have fun and enjoy their stay. This
beach resort is 120 kilometers far from
Hermosillo and 390 from the US border. It is
formally a part of the City of Guaymas, about
a 15-minute drive away.
On the first visit to San Carlos, the guest
will admire the beauty of landscapes, starting
with a "scenic corridor" and accompanied by
the “Tetakawi” hill in the background. This
copper colored mountain is a symbol of the
town. The sea breeze, the waves, the hotels
and condominiums and calm environment make the
visitor want to enjoy a couple of days.
Hotels in San Carlos are suitable for any
budget. In addition, the town offers
condominiums with excellent rooms and trailer
parks with all the necessary services, ideal
for visitors in motor homes. Numerous
restaurants specializing in seafood and
international food are available; the regional
steak dish, “carne asada," is served with
flour tortillas in many restaurants.
For golf lovers, a Country Club is
available with tennis courts and an 18-holes
golf course. There are also two marinas:
Marina San Carlos and Marina Real, both with
complete services for boats. The visitor will
also come across numerous handicraft shops
and boutiques selling beach articles, such as
swim suit and souvenirs for the tourists.
Two of the favorite activities for tourists
are scuba diving and fishing. In San Carlos,
the tourist may catch fantastic species such
as marlin, swordfish, whose catch represents a
major challenge for sport fisherman.
Scuba diving is without a doubt a sport
requiring good physical condition and special
gear -- and San Carlos is the ideal place for
those who enjoy this activity. The beach
offers crystal clear blue waters with more
than 800 species and some artificial reefs.
This place is a paradise for divers who enjoy
exploring a different world in the deep of the
ocean.
There are an ample number of places that rent
boats and scuba gear, with professionals in
each activity to provide lessons to tourists
and take them to incredible places. Other
aquatic sports available in San Carlos include
water skiing, sailing and jet skiing.
With an average temperature of 68°F in
Winter and 95°F in the Summer, San Carlos is
a favorite spot for senior American tourists
known as “snow birds," who arrive during
winter in caravans to enjoy a vacation period
with a nicer weather than that available at
home.
Reaching San Carlos from any part of the US
is easy. The visitor can take Mexico Highway,
a four-lane modern road that intersects with
the scenic corridor. For those who prefer to
travel by plane, Guaymas airport is only 25
Km. away form San Carlos, which accommodates
jets both large and small.
